PA6 – Polyamide 6.
Nylon 6 or polycaprolactam is a polymer developed by Paul Schlack at IG Farben to reproduce the properties of nylon 6,6 without violating its production patent. (Around the same time, Kohei Hoshino at Toray also succeeded in synthesizing nylon 6.) It is a semi-crystalline polyamide. Unlike most other nylons, nylon 6 is not a condensation polymer, but is formed by ring-opening polymerization; This makes it a special case in the comparison between condensation and addition polymers. Its competition with nylon 6,6 and the example it set have also shaped the economics of the synthetic fiber industry.
The main characteristics of polyamides are the following:
- Resistance to aging due to high temperatures and for long periods of time.
- High strength and high rigidity.
- Functional hardness even at low temperatures.
- High flow for easy mold filling.
- Resistance to intrinsic ignition.
- Excellent dielectric properties.
- Good resistance to abrasion.
- Exceptional chemical resistance.
- High barrier/resistance to chemicals from gasoline, grease or scent.
- High barrier to oxygen.
- Water absorption.
- Excellent cost/performance balance.

PA66 – Polyamide 66.
Both polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyamide 66 (PA66) are widely used in many different markets and applications due to their excellent performance/cost ratios. Many parts are made from these polyamides in the Transportation, Electronics and Electrical, Consumer Goods, Construction, and Packaging industries. They are by far the most widely used polyamides worldwide. Although they have similar properties, slight differences persist.
PA6 has a slightly lower temperature resistance compared to PA66 and is also slightly less expansive.
Compared to the PA66, the PA6 exhibits:
- Better hydrolytic stability
- slightly lower cost
- Better long-term thermal aging
- Slightly lower heat deflection temperature (PA66 HDT at 1.8 MPa is 80-90°C)
- Similar stiffness at temperatures below 180°C

PC – Polycarbonate.
Polycarbonate is a group of thermoplastics, easy to work, mold and thermoform, widely used in modern manufacturing. The name polycarbonate indicates that it is a polymer that has functional groups linked by carbonate groups in a long chain. Polycarbonate is a material with synthetic properties.
Carbon monoxide has been used to synthesize carbonates on an industrial scale and produce carbonate, which is then esterified with a phenolic derivative to obtain polyaromatic carbonates.
Polycarbonates can be classified, according to the synthesis of the carbonate group, into polyaromatic carbonates and polyaliphatic carbonates. The latter are the product of the reaction of carbon dioxide with epoxides. Taking into account the thermodynamic stability of carbon dioxide, it is required to use catalysts.

ABS – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Stirene.
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS (for its acronym in English Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a plastic that is highly resistant to impact (blows) widely used in the automotive industry and other uses, both industrial and domestic. It is an amorphous thermoplastic.
It is called engineering plastic or high engineering plastic because it is a plastic whose production and processing is more complex than common plastics, such as polyolefins (polyethylene, polypropylene).
The most important feature of ABS is its high toughness, even at low temperatures (it remains tough at -40°C). It is also hard and rigid, has acceptable chemical resistance, low water absorption, and therefore good dimensional stability, high resistance to abrasion, and can be easily covered with a metallic layer.
ABS can, in one of its variants, be chromed by electrolysis, giving it different metal baths to which it is receptive.

PBT – Polybutene terephthalate.
PBT, polybutene terephthalate, belongs to the family of thermoplastic polyesters. PBT is a semi-crystalline polymer that is primarily used in injection molding for engineering applications. Polybutene terephthalate (PBT) is produced by the polycondensation of terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate with 1,4-butanediol.)
The main properties of polybutene terephthalate (PBT) are the following:
- High strength
- High continuous service temperature (up to 150 °c)
- Very good creep resistance, even at high temperatures
- High stiffness and consistency
- Good friction properties and abrasion resistance
- High dimensional stability
- Good resistance to wear due to weather conditions
- No environmental stress cracking
